Journey to the South Island

This morning we took the 9am interislander to the South Island. The trip takes about 3 hours and it is a lovely one, at one point we even had dolphins jumping alongside us. The best part of the trip is towards the end when you sail into the Marlborough Sounds.

Just see the colout of that water! Once off the ferry we stopped in Picton for lunch and then drove about half an hour to a vineyard called Cloudy Bay. Some of the group did a wine tasting while the rest of us hung out in their lovely garden. They had these amazing basket/egg chairs hanging from the trees which I loved.

We stopped a little way up the road for a toilet break and saw this lovely river.

The drive up to Nelson is absolutely beautiful. Rugged and wild and mountainous.

We arrived in Nelson just after 5. It’s a lovely little town but lots was closed because it’s Easter Monday so it was a little bit dead. We’re staying at a hostel called The Innbetween and its really nice. Four of us went to a Thai restaurant for dinner and now we’re hanging out in the lounge. Tomorrow we have a 6 hour drive to Christchurch, though it will be broken up with stops of course.
